(1:20 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Shares of The9 Ltd. NCTY, -5.88%, an online game provider based in China, gained 17% by mid-day trading to touch $27.31. The day before, the company reported that a healthy gain in its customer base allowed third-quarter profit to rise to 64.3 million yuan or 2.61 yuan per American Depositary Share, from 37.7 million yuan, or 1.54 yuan per ADS, from a year ago. The9 also reported quarterly revenue rose to 245.8 million yuan from 194.5 million yuan in the prior year. Also Wednesday, The9 said Nancy Zhou will resign as vice president, operations, effective Friday, to pursue other personal interests.
(9:35 AM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Google Inc. renewed their run-up to the $500 high-water mark during early trading Thursday, helping to lead the sector higher overall. Google GOOG, -7.44% shares were trading up 0.7% to touch $485.98 early on. Shares of the stock fell 15 cents short of hitting the $500 milestone during Wednesday's session. Among other stocks, shares of Time Warner Inc. TWX were trading down 0.2% after announcing television industry veteran Randy Falco, president and chief operating officer of the NBC Universal Television Group, is replacing Jonathan Miller as chairman and chief executive of its Internet subsidiary, AOL LLC. Shares of CNet Networks CNET, -3.30% were off fractionally after reporting the day before it had received a second delisting notice from the Nasdaq because of its failure to report its third profit on time, the result of its internal backdating investigation. Baidu.com Inc. BIDU, -4.92% shares were trading up 3.3% early after W.R. Hambrech & Co. analyst James Lee initiated coverage of the company with a buy rating, noting it's "well positioned" for China's growing adoption of paid search and electronic commerce. EBay Inc. EBAY, -2.01% shares were slipping early on on Piper Jaffray analysts noting that listings on eBay so far this quarter are 5% lower than what they were a year ago. (2:46 AM ET) LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Reed Elsevier RUK ENL, -0.24% (UK:REL), the Anglo-Dutch media conglomerate, said it's on track to meet targets of fiscal year comparable revenue growth of 5% and a 10% rise in adjusted earnings per share at constant currencies. The Elsevier, LexisNexis and Reed Business divisions, which represent about 85% of adjusted operating profit, are performing strongly in generally favorable market conditions. The Harcourt Education division has however been impacted by underperformance in the assessment business and a weak textbook market.
(2:23 AM ET) LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Euronext(FR:005777), the European stock exchange operator that's agreed to merge with the NYSE Group NYX, , said third-quarter profit rose 9% to 77.4 million euros ($99 million), or 0.69 euros a share, with revenue up 12% to a company-record 262 million euros. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had forecast earnings of 0.68 euros a share on revenue of 260 million euros. Increased cash and derivatives trading helped to lift its profit, the operator of the Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and Lisbon stock exchanges and Liffe futures exchange said. It said October was the fourth busiest month of the year, and November is starting like October.
